ONE STEP CLOSER
One Step Closer is an ongoing analogue portrait series by Sanges Studio, documenting significant cultural figures across film, theatre, music, literature, sport, and public life.
Photographed entirely on film and hand-printed in the darkroom as gelatin silver prints, the series forms part of a long-term photographic archive — a body of work intended to reflect the presence, character, and legacy of individuals who have shaped contemporary culture.
Sitters to date include Dame Judi Dench, Sir Bob Geldof, Jeremy Irons, Brian Cox, and Steven Berkoff, among others, with the series continuing to expand.
Selections from One Step Closer were exhibited at the Dimbola Museum and Galleries alongside the work of Lee Miller, with accompanying BBC coverage.
CHARITABLE CONTEXT
Alongside its cultural and artistic ambition, One Step Closer is closely connected to the work of Under One Sky, a London-based charity supporting people experiencing homelessness.
London continues to face a significant homelessness crisis, with thousands of individuals sleeping rough or living in temporary and unstable conditions. The project seeks, in part, to respond to this reality by directing attention and support toward those most affected.
Funds raised through the project — including future auctions of selected works and the publication of a dedicated book — will contribute to the ongoing work of Under One Sky.
THE PROJECT
One Step Closer is conceived not simply as a series of portraits, but as a growing cultural document — an evolving archive that brings together voices from across disciplines and generations.
Through a combination of exhibition, publication, and charitable fundraising, the project aims to exist simultaneously as:
a significant body of photographic work
a historical record of contemporary cultural figures
and a vehicle for meaningful social contribution
