ABOUT

Sanges is known for cinematic analogue photography that stages elaborate narrative scenes influenced by early cinema, surrealism, and theatrical performance. Working exclusively with film and traditional darkroom processes, each image is hand-printed as a gelatin silver print in carefully controlled editions, reinforcing the work’s material and archival integrity.

Alongside editorial collaborations with publications including Vogue Italia, Harper’s Bazaar, Black+White Photography Magazine, Aesthetica, and The Times, and campaigns for brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Agent Provocateur, and Cutler & Gross, Sanges has developed a distinct body of work that blurs the boundaries between fashion, portraiture, and narrative photography.

His work is held in permanent collections in the United States, including the Center for Creative Photography and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and has been exhibited internationally. Selections from the One Step Closer portrait series were exhibited at the Dimbola Museum and Galleries alongside the work of Lee Miller, with accompanying BBC coverage.

Working across both still and moving image, Sanges is also an award-winning filmmaker. His film Circumstances received Best Art Film at the Portobello Film Festival, London, and Best Experimental Film at the Open Cinema Film Festival in St Petersburg. Additional film works include Sugar, Meet Me in Winter, Music Sound Machine, Sonnambula.

His photographic work has been published in a number of monographs and artist books, including Circumstances, Venus, Wild, Erotic Photography, Love Lust Desire, and The Cutting Room, reflecting the narrative and sequential nature of his practice and its relationship to cinema.

At the core of Sanges’ work is an exploration of image-making as a form of ‘imaginary cinema’ — where each photograph exists as part of a larger, unfolding narrative world, rich with atmosphere, tension, and psychological depth.

"There is something remarkable about those pictures, something  unforeseen, something of new"                 - Patrice Leconte
